Wednesday Round-Up: Pete Carroll Excited About 'Putting Our Team Together Again' – Seahawks.com

Seahawks.com Senior Reporter
Good morning, 12s. Here’s a look at what’s out there today — Wednesday, March 23 — about your Seattle Seahawks.
The 2022 season will serve as a fresh start in many aspects for the Seahawks franchise. It will be the first time that the team is without legendary offensive and defensive captains Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner since 2011, and just the third time in head coach Pete Carroll’s tenure that someone not named Wilson will line up under center in Week 1.
Though the Seahawks might’ve lost a couple of big names so far this offseason, they’ve retained and added some key contributors as well. Pro Bowl safety Quandre Diggs is back on a three-year, $40 million deal; running back Rashaad Penny recently re-signed to a one-year deal as he looks to keep the momentum from his torrid end to the 2021 season; and, among other moves, the team received a haul of valuable draft picks and starting-caliber players from the Broncos in the Russell Wilson trade.

On Tuesday, Carroll joined Mike Salk on Seattle Sports 710 radio to discuss his excitement around building a team for the upcoming season, and offered his assessment of newly acquired quarterback Drew Lock. Click here to listen to the full interview, and check out a few highlights below.
On the excitement for the future of the franchise:
“It’s the challenge, it’s the excitement, it’s the newness. The sense of the return to the core of where we began putting things together, where we really were wide open and really aggressive and all. As time goes, you get kind of connected to the salary cap and the cash cap and all that — you get slowed down a little bit, you don’t have as much freedom. So we feel the freedom of the draft picks, we feel the freedom of the financial situation, and the excitement of putting our team together again.”
His evaluation of QB Drew Lock:
“Really personable, easy to communicate with, very clear, and really accountable. He shows real accountability. He’s not trying to hide from anything about how it didn’t go well and all that. Very clear about it, I really appreciate that. But when you go back to our evaluations of him, he’s athletic, he’s got a great arm, he’s an all-around athlete, he’s a clear thinker, he’s smart, and he’s really competitive. We like his competitive nature, his resourcefulness, the playmaking he’s had over the years. I go back to his college years, again, to revisit that stuff to kind of reinforce it. He’s a really good prospect … We’ve done unbelievably in-depth studies to evaluate him, and we think we see something that can be really special.”
On the “sales pitch” to prospective free agents, and why he believes the team will stay competitive:
“Just in general, we’ve ingrained a winning mentality. The fact that we didn’t get it done last year — we’re not crushed, Mike. We’re disappointed that that happened, [but] we go right back to the way we approach and do things. Always thinking that we’re going to be able to create the positives and be able to control the factors and all that. Quandre [Diggs] and Jamal [Adams] back there playing next to each other, that’s a one-two punch on that end of the football field that is enormously impacting. Also, with Clint [Hurtt] taking over, Sean Desai coming in and Karl Scott coming in, they see the direction that we’re heading and they’re really excited about that. They know how they’re integral parts of us moving forward … Those guys will be huge leadership figures on this team and the defensive side.”
