Von Miller was torn.
Return to the Los Angeles Rams or join the Buffalo Bills? It’s easy to see why it was a tough decision.
Miller was traded to the Rams in the middle of the 2021 season. The pass-rusher would record five sacks in eight regular season games and take his game up another notch in the playoffs. Miller would record four sacks in four games including two in the Rams’ Super Bowl win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
After winning a Super Bowl in Los Angeles, no one would have faulted Miller if he had chose to run it back with the Rams. Los Angeles was certainly interested as many teammates and head coach Sean McVay tried recruiting the pass-rusher back to L.A.
Buffalo, of course, was an intriguing option as well. The Bills were in the Super Bowl hunt the past two seasons and were set up to compete for titles for a long time with Josh Allen under center.
After hearing pitches from both teams, Miller was still on the fence in terms of where he should play in 2022 and beyond. Luckily for Miller, his agent–Joby Banion–was able to connect the pass-rusher with his father on the phone which was recorded for a vlog on Von Miller’s YouTube page.
When Miller asked his father for his thoughts on where he should go, there was no hesitation.
“Buffalo.”
Miller mentioned how difficult it would be leave the Rams. Playing with Aaron Donald was a dream come true for the pass-rusher so he pressed his father further. Needless to say, his dad was more than ready to elaborate on why the Bills were the right choice.
“Hey, you’re playing with the creature (Josh Allen) in Buffalo,” Miller’s father said. “You’ve got a quarterback that may be the best in the league and the offense that is the highest scoring in the league. And a defense that’s the No. 1 defense in the league.”
Miller’s dad let him know that the only thing missing in Buffalo was his son.
“The only thing they’re missing is you,” he told Von. “And they’ve been trying to do this for two years. This is a chance for you to do something that no other player in the history of the NFL has done. You gotta take your heart out of this one, son.”
Dad knows best and by the end of the conversation, Miller’s mind was pretty much set on joining the Bills.
