Tommy Dorfman on Transitioning After 13 Reasons Why

A year after publicly re-introducing himself to the world as a trans woman, Tommy Dorfman Reflects on the impact his Hollywood career had on him gender identity, ,13 Reasons WhyThe alum — who starred in the Netflix original series from 2017-2020 — revealed in an interview with Time In July 2021 that she was “privately identifying and living as a woman.” During the August 15 episode”Broad Thoughts with Rachel BilsonOn the podcast, she became more candid about her acting debut and its impact on her transition.

“…it delayed some of my development and some of my maturity in my mid-20s.”

“In those early years of working, I was just trying to understand [myself]Dorfman said. “I guess if I hadn’t booked that job [’13 Reasons Why’], I would have started transitioning very early. I think because my work is so attached to my body and face and identity, or whatever I was identified with, it delayed some of my development and some of my maturity into my mid-20s. I also feel that I made decisions that not only were not aligned with who I really was or what I wanted, but out of fear.”

dorfman, joe divorced her husband Peter ZurkuhlenIn February after five years of marriage, she said that, reflecting now, she thinks they got married in 2016 because “it felt like a safe, secure place that I could create for myself in a world which was always changing.”

Dorfman also elaborated on the timing of her transition, noting that she once felt like she was “never the right age.” “I always felt like I wasn’t in the right place, the right time, always felt like I wasn’t really meant for the world I was living in,” she said. “… when I started transitioning, I went, ‘Oh, no, no, no, no, I’m totally for this body, this time, and in this world, I was just wearing a sweater. Which was also three sizes short for 28 years.'”
