Seattle Seahawks running back Darwin Thompson put on the perfect show to make sure he is in contention to feature in the upcoming season.
The Seattle Seahawks, on the surface at least, appear to be in something of a rebuilding mode right now based on what the franchise has done over the past ferw months. They traded away franchise quarterback Russell Wilson in a swap with the Denver Broncos and allowed Bobby Wagner to walk away and sign with the Los Angeles Chargers in free agency.
Indeed there are some outlets that have called them the worst team in the NFL, a far cry from what they were in the early to mid-2010s when they were considered perennial challengers for honours off the back of the Legion of Boom’s success.
But as the saying goes, the only way is up, and whilst they might be not looking great right now, there are a few signs to indicate that they might be able to put something together this season, and one of those reasons is the performance of running back Darwin Thompson.
Thompson is someone that is arguably the definition of ‘fringe’ player in the National Football League. Having been drafted in the 6th round by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019, he didn’t get to see the field that much, working predominantly as a special teamer as the Chiefs won the Super Bowl that year.
He amassed 333 total yards in his two years in Kansas City before being released and moving to the practice squad for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before signing again for the Chiefs, this time on the practice squad as well before being released again this past offseason.
But it looks as if Seattle might be the place where he’s getting the best chance to shine.
In the Seahawks’ second preseason game, they took on the Chicago Bears at Lumen Field, and he put on a rather impressive showing. Not only did he score the Seahawks’ only touchdown of the game with an impressive juke move, but he also made Bears defender A.J Thomas look foolish with an insane hurdle during the third quarter:

With rookie running back Kenneth Walker set to be out for the rest of the preseason, chances like this could be crucial for players like Thompson to make his way onto the main roster, and he certainly didn’t do his chances any harm last night, despite the team’s 27-11 loss.
