Indianapolis Colts majority shareholder Jim Irsay has said he believes the National Football League (NFL) could see another new face join the ownership group as he predicted the Seattle Seahawks will be sold in 2024.
Walmart heir Rob Walton was the most recent addition to the NFL ownership group as he acquired the Denver Broncos from the Pat Bowlen Trust for US$4.65 billion over the summer. Similar to the Broncos, the Seahawks are currently under the stewardship of a trust following the death of previous owner Paul Allen in 2018.
Speaking at Bloomberg’s ‘Business of Sports’ event, Irsay foresees a similar outcome to the Broncos for the Seahawks whereby the stewards of Allen’s estate divest the team in the not too distant future.
“Seattle – with Paul Allen, my friend, unfortunately passing away and that team is in a trust – is going to become available I’d imagine in the 2024 range,” Irsay said.
Microsoft co-founder Allen’s sister and lead trustee, Jody Allen, has taken over as chair of the Seahawks – a team recently valued at US$4.5 billion by Forbes. Amid reports of interest in the Seahawks earlier this year, she issued a statement insisting neither the NFL franchise, nor the Allen Trust-owned Portland Trail Blazers in the National Basketball Association (NBA), are currently for sale.
She said: ‘A time will come when [the sale position] changes given Paul’s plans to dedicate the vast majority of his wealth to philanthropy, but estates of this size and complexity can take ten to 20 years to wind down. There is no pre-ordained timeline by which the teams must be sold.’
Despite this, Irsay said he expects a highly competitive – and big money – market for the Seahawks when it is made available. He continued: “I know where franchise values are going and one thing we do know is there’s a high interest out there [in the Seahawks] for people that fell short of the Broncos.
“There’s some really great people that are capable but the problem now is finding people that have the net worth that can actually buy a team. It’s very difficult.”
There was a competitive race to acquire the Broncos, with Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils owner Josh Harris among the other suitors interested in acquiring the team. A group led by Mat Ishbia and another spearheaded by Jose Feliciano and Behdad Eghbali were also in the final reckoning. None of those parties have been linked with the Seahawks as yet.
However, a possible bidder could be Jeff Bezos. The Amazon founder has previously been linked with acquiring the Seahawks and lives locally in the state of Washington.
