Seahawks Release LB Joel Iyiegbuniwe, Waive Four Undrafted Rookies To Reduce Roster To 80 – Senior Reporter
With the deadline coming to reduce NFL rosters to 80 players, the Seahawks made a series of roster moves on Saturday, releasing veteran linebacker Joel Iyiegbuniwe and waiving four other players, safety Bubba Bolden, tight end Cade Brewer, defensive tackle Matthew Gotel and cornerback Elijah Jones.
Iyiegbuniwe signed with the Seahawks as a free agent after spending his first four seasons in Chicago. Bolden, Brewer and Gotel all signed with the Seahawks as undrafted free agents following the 2022 draft, while Jones, who played at Oregon State, signed later in the spring after taking part in rookie minicamp as a tryout player.
NFL teams can carry 80 players on their roster through the final preseason game—the Seahawks play at Dallas on Friday—then teams must reduce their roster to 53 players by Tuesday, August 30. The Seahawks are actually allowed one player over the 80-player limit due to a roster exemption given for linebacker Aaron Donkor, who is part of the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program, but that exemption does not apply to the 53-man roster.
