Retired CPD officer, gunman shot in west direction, say police

A retired Chicago police officer is injured during an exchange of bullets during a robbery attempt in the city’s Lawndale neighborhood on the city’s West Side.

The victim, the 59-year-old man, was in the 3800 block of West Greenshaw Street just after 4 p.m. when at least one gunman approached and announced a robbery, according to Chicago police. Police said the two men took off handcuffs and exchanged bullets on the road before the victim suffered injuries to her arm and stomach. The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he is in good condition.

Different police sources have identified the victim as a retired Chicago officer. Another source said the officer was shot twice and may have been shot during an attempt to shoot.

The source said that the gunman may have also been injured in the encounter and the police are trying to trace him to hospitals in the area.

Chicago Police is investigating.
