NY Democrats only blame themselves for losing Reps. Carolyn Maloney, Mondaire Jones

That the New York Democrats only blame themselves for the redistribution debacle cost representative. Carolyn Maloney And monderi jones their seats in Congress.

A gerrymandering power grab conducted by state Sen. Michael Giannaris (D-Queens) sought to secure 22 House seats for Democrats in New York, leaving Republicans only four.

Gerrymanders effectively deprive voters by stacking districts in favor of one party or the other that minority party members (and independents) have no voice.

but Government Kathy Hochul signs redistribution plan into law anyway – because, like she told The New York Times, she is a “loyal Biden Democrat” who wanted to help her party. And no matter what, it explicitly disregarded the amended state constitution by New York voters, which actually requires a bipartisan redistribution process.

The massive reversal to the power grab took place in April when a state court (soon backed by New York’s Supreme Court) hailed that plan as a blatant violation of the New York Constitution’s ban on partisan gerrymandering.

A new map, drawn up by a court-appointed special master, drew fair, competitive districts – without trying to retain their seats and now protecting the involuntary retirements of Maloney and Jones.

This is harsh justice for the Democratic Party in New York, but the actual authors of the law and the effort to disregard voters have so far paid no price.

Consider it another reason to vote against Hochul this November: She refuses to stand in the way of Democratic power-brokers’ ploys to the legislature, even when New Yorkers’ voting rights are at stake.
