Music festival in Spain hit by strong winds, one dead and many injured

Strong winds hit a beachside concert near Valencia, Spain, early Saturday, partially causing a stage to collapse. CBS News The U.S. put the number of injured at 40, and that one person in his early 20s had died.

The Medusa Festival’s Circus of Madness on Playa de Culera on the Balearic Sea was entering its fourth day of six days on Saturday when bad weather struck early in the morning. In addition to significant damage to the stage, reports indicated that large structures at the entrance to the festival were blown up.

“We are absolutely devastated and shocked by what happened last night,” the festival management said in a social media statement. An “unexpected and violent thunderstorm” hit the beach just after 4 a.m., prompting concert promoters to “immediately evacuate the concert area to ensure the safety of festival goers, staff and performers.”

The remainder of the festival has been cancelled.

The festival, also known as Medusa Sunbeach, began in 2015, focused on EDM and trance music, and is known for its elaborate stage design. The event did not take place in 2020 or 2021.
