Seattle Mariners, Julio Rodriguez agreed to a contract extension that would pay him a minimum of $210 million.

The deal is more complicated than your average contract extension, however, as it includes bonuses for performance, a club option, a player option, and other details.

ESPN’s Jeff Passon is, as always, bringing us all the details.

He explains in a source, that “the deal could be for 8, 13, 16 or 18 years. It guarantees Rodriguez $210 million. If it maxes out, it will be the biggest ever.” : $470 million.”

That’s a good range out result for a 21 year old, isn’t it?

Here’s the deal, explained:

a complicated deal

In short, the agreement is for eight years and $120 million, and expires after 2029.

Passan explains that “after 2028, the Mariners will have to decide whether to choose the club option. Its size and length depend on Rodriguez’s performance in MVP voting. The option will be for eight or 10 years on top of the original deal.” Rodriguez’s fare in MVP voting – depending on the win and finish – could be anywhere from $200-$350 million. If the Mariners so choose, the deal guarantees Rodriguez at least $320 million Is.”

Life is full of surprises, so the Mariners and Rodriguez set out for a hypothetical scenario in which the team does not choose their club option.

“Now, if the Mariners don’t opt out after Year 7, Rodriguez has a player option after Year 8 for five years and $90 million — thus, a 13-year structure and a $210 million floor. Could have turned down and even killed free agency just before his 30th birthday,” explains Pasan.

The most likely outcome is MK opting for J-Rod and keeping him in Seattle until 2037, but we’ve seen a lot of players drop out at a young age before, so this is their way of protecting them.
