Involved in police shooting outside Schererville Dick’s sporting goods

One man has been hospitalized and two others are in custody after a robbery attempt at a sporting goods store resulted in a Shererville officer shooting one of the suspects Saturday afternoon.

Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said Saturday evening that at 4:30 p.m., Schererville police were called to the stores of the main shopping center for a robbery at Dicks Sporting Goods, 101 Indianapolis Blvd., Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. Martinez said that as they arrived, the three suspects were trying to flee the scene in a vehicle and got into a Sherville police car.

Martinez said officers then opened fire on the vehicle, killing one of the suspects.

Martinez said the injured man was taken to a regional hospital in an unknown condition, while the other two suspects were taken into custody. No one else – civilians nor law enforcement – was injured.

Schererville Police Chief Pete Sormaj did not return a call for comment Saturday night.

Martinez said his department would handle the shooting investigation and that no other information would be released at this time.
