The quarterback competition has begun at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton, with Geno Smith and Drew Lock duking it out for the Seattle Seahawks’ starting position.
“Geno’s in the lead right now, he’s ahead,” coach Pete Carroll told reporters after the first training camp practice of the summer on Wednesday. “He ain’t looking back, he’s going for it. And Drew’s not going to take a back seat, so something is going to happen. Jake (Jacob Eason) will be there if we need him. It’s going to be exciting to see.”
Smith starting camp as the front runner is no surprise after backing Russell Wilson up for the last three seasons in Seattle. Carroll wanted to make sure the message was clear, however, no one has been crowned the starter just yet.
“All these guys can chuck the football, we can use the whole field, we are going to bomb it, we are going to do all those things we love doing,” Carroll continued. “We’ll just see how the competition plays out.”
Day two of the battle of the quarterbacks is set for Thursday at 1:30 p.m. PT.
