Cairo – Dozens of people are feared dead after a massive fire broke out at a church in Cairo on Sunday.
Egypt’s health ministry said 55 people were taken to hospital for treatment after being injured in a fire that engulfed the Coptic Orthodox Church of Abu Saifen in Cairo’s Imbaba district.
The cause of the fire, which started around 9 a.m. local time, is yet to be ascertained. The number of deaths was also unclear, but local reports said dozens may have died.
“I am closely following the developments of the tragic accident … and I have directed all concerned state institutions to take all necessary measures and deal with the incident and its effects and to provide all aspects of healthcare to the injured ” Egyptian President Abdel-Fatah el-Sisi said on Facebook.
