Chicago police shoot gunman after brawl in Back of the Yards, officials say

A Chicago police officer shot and seriously injured a gunman during a clash Thursday night in the Back of the Yards, officials say.

Chicago police said in a statement that officers responded to a shotspotter alert on the 5300 block of South May Street at around 11 p.m. and contacted a group of people.

“The officers clashed with an armed criminal,” police said, and one officer pulled out his gun and struck the man.

Police said the man was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. The person’s age was not released.

Police said a pistol was recovered from the spot. No other injuries were reported.

Police said the officer who has been fired will be put on administrative duty for 30 days on a regular basis.

The Civil Office of Police Accountability was investigating.
