Back in 2011, Von Miller thought he was Buffalo bound.
The Buffalo Bills owned the third overall pick in the draft that season and were linked to Miller throughout the process. Unfortunately for the Bills. the Denver Broncos selected Miller at No. 2, something many draft analysts did not foresee.
Miller didn’t see it coming either.
“You know, I’ve been a big fan of the Bills for a long time,” Miller told the media last week. “You know, I thought I was going to be a Buffalo Bill when I first got drafted. Denver came out of nowhere…”
Miller shared that same story with general manager Brandon Beane when he was preparing to sign his contract with Buffalo.
“I feel good about it. I’m excited to be a Buffalo Bill,” Miller told Beane. “You know, I feel like I had a little Buffalo Bill in my blood for a long time. Ever since before I got drafted, thinking I was about to get drafted here. I kinda, you know, did it for me doing my research on the franchise and the history. Huge fan of Bruce Smith. Huge fan of Cornelius Bennett.”
That research was on display in the Bills’ video on Miller’s first 24 hours as a member of the team. At one point on his tour, Miller was taken into the team’s film area. As soon as he walks in, the pass-rusher starts rattling off names of the players featured on the walls.
“Look at James Lofton,” Miller points out. “Cornelius Bennett. Biscuit. Bruce Smith, Jim Kelly, they watch film and stuff here? Kyle Williams.”
Miller rattled off the names of the legends as if he had been a member of the team for years. It’s clear that he had done his homework years ago and that many of those names stuck with him thoughout his career.
Although Miller will only be in Buffalo for a few seasons, he has the chance to become a Bills legend in his own right if he can help take the team to the promised land during his time with the Bills.
