1 in critical condition after being shot by officer in back of the yards

A man was shot dead and seriously injured in a clash with a Chicago police officer Thursday night in the Back of the Yards, police said.

According to police, on the 5300 block of South May Street, two officers from the Chicago Police Department’s Community Safety Team responded to an alert from Shotspotter at around 11:04 p.m. Police said officials found a group of people in the area and contacted them for investigation.

A clash reportedly ensued between the officers and one of the group’s men, who police said was armed, and one of the officers fired his weapon.

Police said the man who clashed with officers was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition. No officer was injured.

According to the police, the officers involved will be put on regular administrative duties for 30 days.

Police said a weapon has been recovered from the spot.

The investigation into the shooting was ongoing by the Civil Office of Police Accountability.
